This past weekend my friend Ned and I went to see the Sandhill Cranes. After all of the nice weather we have had, it figures that we would choose the coldest morning to go. We arrived at the Arizona Electric Power Cooperative viewing station just prior to dawn. As we were approaching we could see all the cranes lifting off of the wetlands. It was an unbelievable experience to see all of those cranes circling the sky, calling to each other. They circled the area for a long time, then started drift off in groups to feed. Here are a few pictures from that morning.
We encountered another group of Sandhill Cranes feeding off of Highway 191. Here are a few pictures from that group.
The Cranes should be in the area until mid-March. If you would like to go to the AEPCO Viewing Area take I-10 to exit 331 (highway 191). Go south just over six miles to the AEPCO entrance.
